Alto de la Covatilla (dpa) – For Primoz Roglic, the red jersey for the overall victory in the Vuelta, just like last year, is ready to be picked up in Madrid. The Slovenian only has to survive the last stage in one piece after he has defended his top position with his last strength.

In the Tour de France he was still the tragic figure when he lost the yellow jersey to fellow countryman Tadej Pogacar on the penultimate day. Nevertheless, Roglic is the best cyclist of recent years: Giro third in 2019, Vuelta winner 2019, tour second in 2020 and now probably the next Vuelta triumph. Five facts about Roglic:

BOOK: His partner Lora Klinc wrote a book about Roglic called “Kilometer Zero”. The work originated during the tour of Spain, which he won. It is a kind of diary of the former volleyball player who accompanied their two-month-old son in the caravan of the Vuelta. There is no book planned for this year.

HOME: Born in Trbovlje, Roglic grew up in the 1200 inhabitants of Kisovec village. The son of a miner and a dental assistant did what all sporty kids did: ski jumping. Because in Kisovec there is a facility with five starting tables and walk-in lanes. Roglic now lives in Monaco like many professional cyclists.

JUMPING: Roglic has made a big leap in his career as a ski jumper. He once reached 183 meters in the ski jumping mecca of Planica. The Slovenian’s greatest success in his old profession was the world junior title in 2007.

RAD: Roglic paid a total of 1,300 euros in 2012 for his first used racing bike. He collected the money by selling his moped. Even at the beginning of his professional career, Roglic was short of money. At the end of 2015, he started at Jumbo-Visma for a minimum salary of 40,000 euros.

VO2MAX: Even before his cycling career, Roglic had an oxygen uptake capacity of about 80 milliliters per minute and kilograms of body weight. He was in the reach of four-time Tour champion Chris Froome, who had similar values at the start of his professional time.
