Abu Dhabi (dpa) – Mick Schumacher warns of too high expectations in his first Formula 1 season.
“Of course as a driver you always go in and you want to win everything. But that is not exactly what we are aiming for next year. We have to see what awaits us,” said the 21-year-old young driver at ZDF- “Sportstudio” and added: “Of course it would be nice if we could win, but we have to be realistic and manage our expectations.”
Formula 2 champion Schumacher will drive for the American racing team Haas in the motorsport premier class from 2021, following in the footsteps of his father Michael. His new employer is one of the backbenchers in the racing series. On Friday, the youngster was allowed to participate in the Formula 1 training for the first time and on Tuesday he will again take a test for young drivers in Abu Dhabi. The speed is “worlds faster in Formula 1. You have to get used to it, that comes with time and experience”, said Schumacher, who wants to do as many laps as possible in the next test.
Schumacher approaches the task with great enthusiasm and curiosity. “I have the highest expectations of myself – and of course I want to meet them. The pressure comes more from me than from outside,” said the Swiss preferably, who wants to develop and set smaller goals. “Maybe accumulating points is small wins for us. That can help us as a team,” he said.
