Kolding (AP) – The German handball women can continue to hope for a place in the semifinals of the EM after a gala performance. The DHB squad won their opening game in the main round against Hungary 32:25 (13:11) and remains in the race for the medals with 4: 2 points.
The best German pitchers in Kolding were defender Emily Bölk with five goals and Antje Lauenroth and Xenia Smits (both 4). The next opponent of the team of national coach Henk Groener is world champion the Netherlands on Monday. “I am very happy that today we showed what makes us strong,” said Captain Kim Naidzinavicius.
Five days after the trembling match in the preliminary round against Poland (21:21), the DHB selection showed no teething problems. In the defense with another convincing goalkeeper Dinah Eckerle in the back, they grabbed resolutely, initially a lot ran over the outside during the attack. The reward was a four goal lead at 8: 4 at 16 minutes.
Hungary’s coach responded with a pause to his team’s false start. The German team could not be thrown out of rhythm. Time and time again national coach Henk Groener stood on the sidelines with a smile and applauded his protégés, who presented themselves in much improved form.
But then, as so often, there was an idle phase in the attack. There was no goal for seven minutes, bringing the Hungarians back into the game. With a 4-0 run, the rival shortened from 6:11 AM to 10:11 AM (27th). However, the DHB women did not allow the equalizer and took a pillow with two goals into half time.
After the change, the Groener team got off to a better start and quickly drove to 17:11 (35th). Eckerle in particular was the guarantee of success in this phase with numerous parades. In the offensive, however, the German team again missed too many opportunities – and the cover was no longer so safe. In the middle of the second half, Hungary was back at 9:20 PM.
The DHB women got up again. Seven minutes before the end, eighth place in the World Cup was back on course at 26.21 hours for the victory, from which he could no longer be distracted. On the contrary, the lead was even increased in the final stages and so something was done for the poor goal difference after the historic 11:42 pm defeat against Norway.
