Work victory for Borussia Dortmund: The team of coach Lucien Favre won 2-1 (0-1) at Zenit Saint Petersburg and thanks to the 2-2 draw of rival Lazio Rome in the parallel match against Bruges, they are the winners of the Champions League- group F. firm. Lukasz Piszczek (68th) and Axel Witsel (78th) turned the game around, Sebastian Driussi (16th) had given Zenit the lead.
BVB struggled with the hosts for a long time. Dortmund jewel Youssoufa Moukoko set a record with his replacement in the 58th minute: at 16 years and 18 days, the forward is now the youngest player in the history of the premier class.
“There was fierce fighting. At first we didn’t manage to play much, then it got better. It was a disgusting victory, not glorious – at last”, DAZN captain Marco Reus said: “It’s good for us.”
Dortmund with personnel problems
BVB lacked a complete team, which affected teamwork. Besides top star Haaland, Thomas Meunier and Thomas Delaney, Manuel Akanji and Raphael Guerreiro also did not get fit in time. Mahmoud Dahoud, Reinier and Mateu Morey stayed at home, Jadon Sancho, Gio Reyna and goalkeeper Roman Bürki, who was replaced by Marwin Hitz, were initially spared.
“We really want to win the group,” sports director Michael Zorc told the team via Sky – although coach Lucien Favre had called first place “irrelevant” a few days earlier.
Reus struggled to somehow replace Haaland at minus five degrees Celsius, like against Lazio (1: 1), but BVB rarely got into dangerous positions. For Thorgan Hazard’s (19th) first chance, the guests were already behind as Nico Schulz refused to fight Alexej Sutormin on the left. Mats Hummels pretended that Driussi’s shot was untenable.
Bellingham was unlucky
BVB became more active, but was left too open. After a through ball, Serdar Azmoun overcame the hopeless heat from a narrow offside position (33.). On the other hand, Jude Bellingham headed detached about the goal of Zenit (43.), Reus was then unlucky with a tap on the post.
Safety in the Corona hotspot was more important to BVB than sports. After a training ground, the club had not even looked around: “Airport – Hotel – Match – Airport” was the motto. Accordingly, the players stretched out on a carpet in the hotel room at noon, and the landing in Paderborn was scheduled at 2.15 on Wednesday evening.
First he had to work hard for 45 minutes: Hitz had to save twice immediately after the break (47th), Zenit looked fresher and more involved, had a lot of space. Again, BVB missed the element of in-depth passes without Haaland. Moukoko and Reyna, later also Sancho, should change that – the Dortmund fought stubbornly.
The hunt for appointments now continues unabated: three league matches and the second round of the cup at Eintracht Braunschweig are scheduled for Christmas. The next thumbnail break ends on January 3.
