Flensburg (dpa) – The handball players of SG Flensburg-Handewitt started the new season of the Champions League with a win.
Against Polish champion KS Vive Kielce, the North Germans won 31:30 (14:14). The best pitchers in the Flensburg Arena, where there were no spectators, were SG player Magnus Rød with six goals and Uladzislau Kulesch with eight goals for Kielce.
Flensburg’s trainer, Maik Machulla, was forced to improvise, because the opportunity to play for Domen Sikosek Pelko, who had signed up, was not available in time. Defenders Mads Mensah Larsen and Göran Sögard Johannessen tried to replace the injured Johannes Golla and Jacob Heinl.
The guests from Poland received a lot of support from the German national goalkeeper Andreas Wolff. The North Germans were not left behind, however, and took the lead again in the 21st minute thanks to Hampus Wanne’s goal to make it 10: 9.
After the break, both teams bet guides away. With two strong saves in the lightning-fast final phase, the Flensburg goalkeeper Torbjörn Bergerud gave his team a good starting position, which killed his leaders in a narrow but deserved victory.
