Last week, Joe Biden won the TV duel against Donald Trump, now the delegates are in talks. It could be a preview of the 2024 elections.
The chaotic TV duel between US President Donald Trump and his Democratic challenger Joe Biden was only a week ago. Now it goes into the next round: Thursday morning (3 hours German time) the deputies Mike and Kamala Harris compete against each other.
For both, it’s not just about presenting their respective candidates particularly well. For Mike Pence, Donald Trump’s deputy, it’s about his own political survival. He is considered a loyal supporter of Trump, who has always defended him. If Trump crashes in the Nov. 3 election, the party will blame Pence as well. A separate presidential candidacy in 2024 would then be next to impossible.

Speculation: Will Harris Run for 2024 Elections?
For Kamala Harris, however, it stands like that Nominated for the Vice-Presidency of Joe Biden less at stake. But the former California prosecutor would also have ambitions to run for election in 2024. Due to his advanced age, 77-year-old Biden is unlikely to run in four years. This debate could therefore be a preview of the 2024 election campaign.

Last week, Donald Trump emerged as the loser from the game against Biden. So a victory is needed, Trump Pence’s team wants to raise the polls again. To do this, Pence must defend President Trump’s policies. And that is extremely complicated in this situation: the US president is sick with the corona virus, and there are many Speculation about his health. Pence himself headed the White House coronavirus task force, hardly heard of since the summer. That alone could be discussed all evening.
Debates about the coronavirus are not popular
Republicans have been reluctant to debate the coronavirus because it doesn’t shed good light on their government. The United States is one of the countries in the world most affected by the pandemic. More than 210,000 people died and millions lost their jobs. The economy, which Trump used to boast of, has been hit hard. Now the White House has also become a hotspot for new infections and negotiations about a new Corona aid package have jumped. That too could be discussed throughout the evening.
Pence is likely to face a tough debate – mainly because Kamala Harris is considered aggressive. Harris rose to prominence at Brett Kavanaugh’s 2018 Senate Hearing, before being appointed a Supreme Court Justice. Harris pressured him with tough questions, including allegations of sexual harassment. In 2019, she, like Biden, applied for her party’s presidential candidacy. In TV duels for the Democratic primaries, she also attacked the current candidate, Joe Biden, sharply.
Pence, on the other hand, is considered the type who does not like to be involved in disputes and who can ward off attacks well. He already showed this in 2016 in the debate with Tim Kaine, the deputy of the then Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. According to many Americans, Pence emerged victorious from the game. The Indiana politician was well prepared, seemed calm, and capable. He reached the public much better than Kaine could, even when fact-checkers revealed many falsehoods.
That could be a hindrance to Harris. The problem with their campaign for the Democratic presidential candidacy was that the spark didn’t jump to the voters, as Chillreport correspondent Fabian Reinbold wrote. She’s also considered someone who shines, especially if she can prepare – an attack she can’t foresee can stumble her.
