6th matchday

Berlin (dpa) – Bruno Labbadia didn’t care about the bare figures from Hertha’s troubled recent past. Just four points from six games – the Berliners last started worse in the Bundesliga in 2009, followed by relegation at the end of the season.

“I am convinced by my experience that if we stick to it, as we did, sooner or later we will get more points”, the Hertha coach promised after the 1-1 (1-1) against. VfL Wolfsburg on Sunday evening.

After the third winless home game of the still young season, Labbadia was asked to help his team, which was certainly not properly rehearsed, and must continue to focus on the time factor. “It’s the start of the season, so it’s important to stay calm and be very clear about things. It’s important to support the team in all areas,” said the 54-year-old. Wolfsburg’s Ridle Baku (20th) equalized Matheus Cunha’s opening goal (6th minute).

The Berliners are further driven by their self-built expectations to play much higher in the Bundesliga. 14th place, two points for the relegation zone, is far too far from your own claims. “We are not satisfied with the number of points, that is not a question. But we can estimate the situation well. We also try not to talk nicely, we try to give facts,” said Labbadia.

The fact against Wolfsburg was that after four defeats, the Berliners were much closer to the winning goal, especially in the second half, than the VW city’s only unbeaten Bundesliga team after their fifth draw. “The past two games have shown that if we work well, we can play well. We now have to persevere, learn and learn to do better and better,” said national defender Niklas Stark.

Some things can get better in the future with Mattéo Guendouzi. The Frenchman hinted on his 37-minute debut that he could clearly improve the quality of football. “I think he has given our game the touch we need,” said Labbadia. The crux: even the 21-year-old still needs time to learn Berlin’s automatisms.

The faster he and his new colleagues succeed in this, the less Labbadia will have to listen to comparisons of figures from the 2009/2010 season. After the guest appearance on Saturday at FC Augsburg and the international break, three rather difficult duels for Hertha against Borussia Dortmund, at Bayer Leverkusen and in the Berlin derby against Union.
