Is the way clear for Sebastian Vettel? Sergio Perez leaves Racing Point

Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel is still without a team for the coming season – but the still Ferrari driver is repeatedly linked with Racing Point. Now the business could move.

Formula 1 driver Sergio Perez will leave the Racing Point team prematurely after seven years at the end of the current season, potentially paving the way for Sebastian Vettel. The 30-year-old Mexican said on Twitter: “I have no plan B. I would like to continue in Formula 1, but only if I find a project that motivates me to give 100 percent in every lap,” Perez wrote. His original contract with Racing Point ran until 2022.

With the departure of the Mexican, four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel could now find a cockpit that meets his requirements. His contract with Ferrari expires at the end of this year and has not been renewed. Racing Point team principal Otmar Szafnauer said of the Heppenheimer at the end of July: “How could you not be interested in a four-time champion?”

Racing Point will become Aston Martin in 2021

By then there were rumors that Perez was looking for a new team. In an interview, the Mexican also revealed that he expects to be fired in the event of Vettel’s commitment. Second RP pilot Lance Stroll, the son of billionaire team co-owner Lawrence Stroll, is considered virtually indisputable.

Racing Point will start next season under the new name Aston Martin. The 53-time Grand Prix winner Vettel would certainly guarantee the British sports car manufacturer a lot of attention at the start of their name sponsorship.

But even for Nico Hulkenberg, Perez’s announcement could result in a minimal chance. Should Racing Point not sign Vettel, the Emmericher could become an option. The 33-year-old replaced Perez, who was suffering from Corona at the time, in the two races of the season at Silverstone, Great Britain, and convinced him. Hülkenberg recently confirmed talks with two Formula 1 teams, including Alfa Romeo.
