Warm and not aloof: Just as her husband Joe Biden sells himself as Donald Trump’s counterpart, Jill is seen as the opposite of First Lady Melania. Should the Biden move to the White House, a novelty would be provided.
Pull away the hand that her husband is reaching for? In the case of Jill Biden, it is unthinkable how Melania Trump caused a stir several times. Challenger Joe Biden’s wife could have given her husband a voice or two with her style. The warm 69-year-old was his best campaigner.
“Keep the faith,” she tweeted when the poll results were not the clear victory she had hoped for. “Believe in it.”

She acts as his support and sometimes lends him a hand – like a bodyguard. After such an experience, Biden joked in March, “I’m probably the only presidential candidate whose wife is also Secret Service.” For the second time in a short time, his wife had stopped and pushed back people pushing the presidential candidate onto the podium. The teacher Jill Biden has everything under control.
That was also the case when her husband chatted with journalists a few days ago: in a friendly, but determined way, she pulled him back a little – minimal distance into the Corona crisis. So much motherhood was food for some Trump supporters back then, who like to exaggerate candidate Biden as a senile old man.
Hug in the TV duel
But it must also show how important it is for the Bidens to see Corona as a threat. Things looked different with the Trump couple: When he joked about masks and mask wearers, they advertised for it – it wasn’t campaign help for Trump. Melania Trump showed that she is more than “a trophy on the shelf,” as the New York Times put it. The wording should make the contrast with Jill Biden even clearer. Melanie Trump also complained in a covert conversation that she was believed to be an accomplice to her husband.
The contrast was perhaps most painfully visible to Trump in the candidates’ second TV duel. Half of America watched and saw no clear winner – just a Jill Biden. As Melanie Trump took the stage at the end and stood stiff next to her husband, Jill Biden hugged her husband beaming, it seemed like congratulations to a winner.

The Bidens are a well-coordinated team and have been around for 45 years. Melania Trump has been Donald Trump’s third wife since 2005 and the Bidens have been married since 1977. It is the second marriage for both: Joe Biden had lost his first wife and mother of two in an accident when he met the English teacher in 1975. From her the enthusiastic report has been handed down to her mother: “Mom, I finally met a gentleman.” She had just split up after four years with a college soccer player she married when she was 19.

After marrying Joe Biden, she temporarily quit her job to take care of his two sons and then their daughter, who was born in 1981. That’s not obvious: when Barack Obama became president in 2008 and Joe Biden became vice president, the doctor of education continued to teach at what is called a community college, a sort of intermediate level between school and university. And in a CBS interview, she stated that she can also propose that as a first lady.
Children’s book about the stuttering Joe
The teaching profession is her passion. But that shouldn’t have been her only motivation when she published a children’s book after her husband’s nomination in June 2020: “Joey: The Story of Joe Biden” tells the story of a stuttering and bullied boy – who eventually achieved everything. That too was campaign help for her husband.

A spouse’s role in an election campaign is usually to give the candidate a credible human face. Jill Biden got the hang of this, she got emotional in her nomination speech, usually transferred from a school. She talked about her husband’s fate, how he managed to keep the family together and lead them through the difficult times. So Joe Biden will heal the nation too.
“Eeloquent, warm, not distant”
She has experience with election campaigns. While Melania Trump was almost never seen writing about her role in the White House on Twitter, Jill Biden roamed the states making flaming calls for her husband’s election.
She traveled extensively across the country to recruit supporters, votes and donations: in swing states, which could have influenced the election results, with her husband, alone in other states. There she immediately finds the connection with the people, eloquent, cordial, not distant. Like the nice teacher from school a few blocks away.
