Champions against cup winners or Liverpool against Arsenal: that was the first competitive match of the English season. The game was a draw, at a reasonable level – and ended in a penalty shoot-out.
Liverpool FC lost their first competitive match of the season and missed their first title. In the Community Shield, coach Jürgen Klopp’s team lost 4-5 after penalties against Arsenal. In the game between champion and cup winner it was 1: 1 after 90 minutes, there was no extra time.
Brewster misses the point
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (12th) gave Arsenal the lead in the first half, while Japanese substitute Takumi Minamino (73rd) took Liverpool on penalties. There, Liverpool’s younger Rhian Brewster failed, Aubameyang converted the decisive penalty kick into victory.

Arsenal, which only qualified for international affairs after a weak Premier League season after winning the cup, celebrated its 16th victory in the traditional league. Liverpool, on the other hand, have to wait for their first success in the Community Shield since 2006. In the previous year, the then number two had lost to double winner Manchester City – even after penalties.
Only Alexander-Arnold was missing
The mission to defend the Premier League title begins for Klopp and his team on September 12 (6.30pm) against newly promoted Leeds United. Arsenal will take on the same day (1.30 p.m.) against the colleague from Leeds who promoted Fulham FC.
Klopp sent his best possible team onto the field for the first endurance test of the new season, only right back Trent Alexander-Arnold was missing from the regular formation. Youngster Neco Williams defended himself for the England international.
Aubameyang with a remarkable hit
Just like in the final stages of the preseason, Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta did without Mesut Özil. Various rumors of a possible change have recently been circulating around the 2014 world champion. Shkodran Mustafi was injured and goalkeeper Bernd Leno was sitting on the bench.
Liverpool got off to a good start, with an early Virgil van Dijk goal disallowed for offside. However, in the first real attack, Arsenal took the lead. Aubameyang threw the ball into the far corner, worth seeing, Williams acted too timid. Arsenal got stronger now, Liverpool kept trying to control.
In the second half, Liverpool increased the pressure, Sadio Mané gave goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez (56th) the chance to equalize. Minamino succeeded in this after preparatory work by Mohamed Salah.
