Paris (AP) – American tennis player Sofia Kenin can crown her climb to the top with her second Grand Slam title this year.

After 6: 4, 7: 5 in the semifinals against two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova, the Australian Open winner is the favorite in the final. Anything but a success of the number six in the world on Saturday in Paris would be a sensation. Kenin will play the final against Polish outsider Iga Swiatek. The world ranking 54. finished the Argentine qualifying match Nadia Podoroska 6: 2, 6: 1 in the surprising semi-final. This made Swiatek the first Polish finalist at the French Open in the professional era since 1968.

“I’m a little surprised. I never thought I would make it to the final. A dream came true,” she said. Surprisingly dominant in all of her previous six matches in Paris and still without losing a set, the 19-year-old has delighted Polish President Andrzej Duda with her surprising string of successes. “Crazy! Bravo! Bravo! Bravo,” Duda wrote on Twitter. He thanks her for representing the country in such a beautiful way.

21-year-old Kenin celebrated her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in Melbourne early this year, when the tennis world had not yet been shaken by the coronavirus crisis. In Paris, 2019 Australian winner Ashleigh Barty was missing due to the pandemic. Japanese Naomi Osaka, who won the US Open after a month-long break from the tournament, had to cancel due to an injury. The Romanian fellow favorite Simona Halep unexpectedly had no chance against Swiatek in the eighth finals.

Kvitova had finished the most successful Grand Slam tournament to date in singles against Swabian Laura Siegemund in the quarter-finals, but the Czech did not reach her top level in the semi-finals. Kenin led quickly with 4: 1 in the first set and continued to play consistently and uncompromisingly even after Kvitova came close to 4: 3. In the second set, the young American showed nerves when she had to accept the 5: 5 after a 5: 3 again, but after that she could not be stopped from her victory in two sets.
