London (dpa) – coach Jürgen Klopp has missed the hoped-for first title of the new season at Liverpool FC. The English football champions had to admit their defeat to cup winner Arsenal FC 4: 5 after penalties in the Supercup.
After a balanced 90 minutes it was 1: 1 (0: 1) in the empty Wembley Stadium in London, there was no extra time. Former Dortmunder Bundesliga pro Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang converted the decisive fifth penalty for the Gunners after Rhian Brewster hit the bar as the third Liverpool shooter.
Aubameyang had put Arsenal ahead early with a remarkable long shot (12th), Japanese Takumi Minamino initially leveled his first competitive goal for the Reds (73rd). Even before the break, the champions pushed for the equalizing goal, in the second half former Hoffenheim Roberto Firmino (51st) and Sadio Mané (56th) narrowly missed. But Arsenal also had opportunities.
The Supercup – Community Shield in England – is not a high priority. It’s considered a better friendly and the final form check before the Premier League starts. In addition, the preparation time for both clubs was minimal. “Do I want to play a real game after two weeks of preparation? No!”, Klopp had said before the season opener.
Chelsea won the Women’s Community Shield with a 2-0 (0-0) win against Manchester City. Corona’s six-month forced break in English women’s football also ended with the top game. Millie Bright (66th minute) and Erin Cuthbert (90th + 1) scored the goals for the head club.
