A deadly attack took place in Nice, France. In one church, three people apparently died with a knife.
According to police sources, three people were killed in a knife attack in the southern French city of Nice. According to the mayor of Nice, the act took place in a church, the Notre-Dame Basilica of Nice. The anti-terrorist prosecutor took over the investigation.
Police had previously spoken of one death and several injuries in an initial assessment. Mayor Christian Estrosi later announced that three people had been seriously injured, two of whom were deadly. It is unclear whether the now confirmed third deaths are the initially seriously injured.
The alleged perpetrator has been arrested, according to the mayor. French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced an emergency meeting on Twitter, while Prime Minister Jean Castex left the ongoing parliamentary debate on the new lockdown.
Interior Minister Darmanin had repeatedly warned of a high risk of terrorism in the country. That was only two weeks ago a teacher was beheaded in a suburb of Paris. The crime had caused horror across the country. Tens of thousands took to the streets to show their solidarity.
