Former Indian Union Minister and BJP leader Yashwant Singh has passed away. According to a report on the NDTV website, the former army officer died of a heart attack at the Army Hospital in Delhi at around 8 am on Sunday. Bharti has expressed grief over his deathPrime Minister Narendra Modi.

In Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government, Yashwant has played important roles as Finance Minister, External Affairs Minister and Defense Minister. Yashwant was born on 3 January 1936 in Baram district of Rajasthan. Educated at Mayo College and the National Defense Academy, he joined the Indian Army in the sixties. He later resigned as an officer in the Indian Army to pursue a career in politics. He is one of the founders of the BJP.

In the eighties, Yashwant first entered the Rajya Sabha. Expressing grief over his death, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “First he served the country as an army and then a veteran politician.” I am saddened by his death. “
