Zurich (dpa) – Forward Robert Lewandowski is shortlisted for the 2020 World Footballer Awards, otherwise Champions League winner FC Bayern Munich would barely be included in the list of eleven nominated players.
Only Spaniard Thiago, who now plays for Liverpool, is still available. National goalkeeper Manuel Neuer only appears on the six-person list – alongside Marc-André ter Stegen (FC Barcelona), among others – for the choice of the world goalkeeper.
With three other players (Sadio Mané, Mohamed Salah and Virgel van Dijk), Liverpool FC has the largest contingent in the choice of the world footballer. Superstars Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona), Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus Turin), Neymar and Kylian Mbappé (both Paris Saint-Germain) are among them. A German player is not there. Lewandowski, the top scorer of the last Champions League and Bundesliga season, was named Europe’s Footballer of the Year in early October and is considered a favorite.
In Jürgen Klopp (Liverpool) and Hansi Flick (FC Bayern), two German trainers were also nominated for the coach of the year. For women, Dzsenifer Marozsán of Olympique Lyon is the only German player in the pre-selection for world football. Stephan Lerch was nominated for coaches by the German women’s champion VfL Wolfsburg.
The three finalists in the respective categories will be announced by the FIFA world association on December 11. The award ceremony will take place on December 17. Fans can vote on the FIFA website until December 9. In addition, the choice of the national coach, the respective captain and a professional journalist from the federal states also influences the decision.
