Leipzig (dpa) – During lunch, national coach Joachim Löw will receive the first swing of his team on Monday for the final three-pack of the German national football team in 2020. A short but memorable year of international matches comes to an end in Leipzig and Seville.
As in October, the DFB roster at the end of the year is another three-pack that Löw doesn’t like. The test against the Czech Republic on Wednesday (8.45 p.m. / RTL) in Leipzig will be followed by the Nations League match against Ukraine on Saturday and the group final of the competition in Seville against Spain three days later. Low asks for the first practice on Monday evening (6 p.m.) on the grounds of the Bundesliga club RB Leipzig.
The DFB is again intensifying its corona measures to protect national players, including by further testing the team, the sports management around Löw and the support staff. In addition, the DFB entourage must be isolated throughout the international phase.
After Joshua Kimmich’s knee injury and the rejections of Marcel Halstenberg and Thilo Kehrer due to groin problems, the national coach has to improvise again. On Sunday evening, Löw nominated fullback Ridle Baku (VfL Wolfsburg) for the A-selection for the first time. Due to injuries, he has to do without multiple players such as Lukas Klostermann and Julian Draxler. Niklas Süle and Kai Havertz are absent due to positive corona tests.
As the newspaper “Bild” reported online Sunday evening, Kimmich is being examined by a knee specialist in Innsbruck. Only then will an official diagnosis of the nature and extent of the injury be made on Monday and it will be decided whether surgery is necessary.
Seven players get a few days off from Löw to manage their workload. Captain Manuel Neuer, Serge Gnabry, Leon Goretzka, Leroy Sané, Toni Kroos, Timo Werner and Matthias Ginter can regenerate until Thursday. As in the 3: 3 against Turkey in October, Löw is planning the Czech test with a B-team. This is why the other newcomers Felix Uduokhai and Philipp Max, who were nominated for Baku, have justified hopes for their first appearance in the DFB shirt.
THE NATIONS LEAGUE:
After relegation in 2018, which was only avoided by a league reform, this time the DFB squad has the chance to win the group for the final matches. Spain is one point ahead of Germany and Ukraine. Two wins would guarantee Low participation in the final tournament in October 2021. A renewed relegation scenario is currently unlikely with four points ahead of Switzerland as the bottom group.
