Frankfurt / Main (dpa) – General Manager Christian Seifert leaves the German football league after his contract expires in 2022.
“These are challenging times that demand clarity and reliability. This applies to the DFL as a whole and also to my professional ambitions. That is why I informed Mr. Peter Peters, as chairman of the supervisory board, that after my contract with the DFL. June 2022, ” Seifert said in a personal statement.
First newspaper “Bild” reported that the boss of the umbrella organization of the 36 professional clubs will not renew his contract, which expires on June 30, 2022. Peters, as chairman of the supervisory board of DFL GmbH, is said to have informed the board and the supervisory board on Sunday evening about the decision of 51-year-old Seifert.
“This decision is already important now, so that the Supervisory Board has the opportunity at an early stage to take this fact into account in considerations about the future organization of DFL GmbH,” explains Seifert. He wants to open a new professional chapter in two years. “Until then, of course, I will continue to focus with great ambition and full commitment on the current and future challenges in my DFL roles,” he said.
Seifert has been with the DFL since 2005 and has achieved significant success during his tenure. The marketing of the TV rights has grown from 400 million euros per season to more than one billion euros during his tenure. During the Corona crisis, the Bundesliga was the first of the major sports leagues worldwide to resume play with a DFL hygiene concept.
In recent months, Seifert has proven himself as a crisis manager and, under pressure from politicians and fan organizations, has also entered into a debate about the future of the overheated professional business with the task force “Future of professional football”.
The top manager recently resigned as a member of the Presidential Committee of the German Football Association (DFB). According to media reports, Seifert officially justified his withdrawal on the grounds that the corona problem caused him to lack the time to adequately address the broad DFB topics.
