Berlin (AP) – Bayer Leverkusen has successfully defended its lead in the Bundesliga rankings.
Three days before the summit against the German champions FC Bayern, the team of trainer Peter Bosz also won the Rhine derby against neighbor 1. FC Köln on Wednesday evening with 4-0 (2-0).
The second at the table from Munich struggled to a 2-1 (1: 1) against the previously unbeaten VfL Wolfsburg thanks to the double of world footballer Robert Lewandowski. As third at the table, RB Leipzig had to settle for a 1-0 (0-0) at TSG Hoffenheim.
At the end of the table, the situation for the last FC Schalke 04 after the 2-0 (0-0) against SC Freiburg becomes increasingly gloomy. Even for Arminia Bielefeld, third place, the situation after the 0: 1 (0: 0) against FC Augsburg is becoming increasingly threatening.
The Leverkusen, unbeaten even after the twelfth matchday, confirmed their top form with the overwhelmed Cologne team and are well equipped for the game against FC Bayern. Mitchell Weiser (8th), Moussa Diaby (10th), Patrik Schick (54th) and Florian Wirtz (59th) scored the clear victory. With 28 points, Bayer is only one point ahead of Bayern and Leipzig. Borussia Dortmund is fourth, six points behind Leverkusen.
For Munich, the match against Wolfsburg did not start according to plan. Maximilian Philipp (5th) gave the guests an early lead after a mistake by Leroy Sané. Again it was Lewandowski with his goals 14 and 15 of the season who decided the game. The Pole again came up with arguments why he should be declared world footballer for the first time on Thursday.
The people of Leipzig had a hard time at Hoffenheim as Bayern did against Wolfsburg. Yussuf Poulsen (60.) scored his goal for the win and the connection to Bayer and Bayern.
Another frightening feat extended FC Schalke 04’s series of failures to 28 games without a win. Without guts and ideas, coach Manuel Baum’s team had no chance against SC Freiburg. Roland Sallai (50/68) was the most acclaimed player in the Breisgau with his first double in the Bundesliga.
After the second victory in a row, Freiburg left the danger zone for the time being, while Schalke remained in the table cellar with four points from twelve games during the holidays. Things don’t look much better for their next opponent from Bielefeld. The newly promoted team held a 0-0 draw for a long time before Augsburg captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw (85th) hit.
