Sinsheim (AP) – Bayern Munich has yet to be defeated. Just 60 hours after the victorious European Super Cup final, the Munich team conceded their first competitive defeat in 2020 with a 1: 4 (1: 2) at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.
The record champion in the Bundesliga recently lost 2-1 in Mönchengladbach on December 7. For Hoffenheim’s new coach Sebastian Hoeneß, the nephew of Bayern’s honorary president Uli Hoeneß, the surprise on Sunday was a special triumph.
The 38-year-old led FC Bayern II to the championship in the third division last season. Ermin Bicakcic (16th minute) and Munas Dabbur (24th) gave the Kraichgauer the lead. 6030 spectators in the Sinsheim stadium then saw the goal of Joshua Kimmich (36th). The excellent Andrej Kramaric (77th) rose to 3: 1, but he marked the final 4: 1 score with a penalty (90 + 2). For him it was the ninth goal in the last three Bundesliga matches.
Three days before the German Super Cup final against Borussia Dortmund, Munich remained weak and without ideas on the attack. Previously, the champion and Champions League winner was unbeaten in 21 games. With this downer, Bayern also missed a league record of eleven cross-season away victories. Head coach Hansi Flick had spared his somewhat sick striker Robert Lewandowski and national player Leon Goretzka until the 57th minute.
After a somewhat pomadic but superior initial phase of the Munich team, TSG took advantage of the first two chances ice cold: Bicakcic headed the 1-0 after a corner, Dabbur duped national goalkeeper Manuel Neuer with a jack after a mistake by Benjamin Pavard. Then Flick took a long sip from the water bottle on the sofa.
The Bayern defense left the Hoffenheimers with unprecedented loopholes: Christoph Baumgartner had the 3-0 on foot after just under half an hour, but the ball went over it. Lewandowski representative Joshua Zirkzee had not seen anything at the time. TSG had to do without captain and defender Benjamin Hübner and Bicakcic was injured before the break.
Kimmich made it 1: 2, but Christoph Baumgartner and Andrej Kramaric missed even more good chances for TSG before half time. After the restart, Dabbur twice missed 3: 1. In the increasingly hectic game, the Munich team rubbed off in duels. Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann had much less to do in his 200th Bundesliga game than his counterpart Neuer.
Substitutes Lewandowski and Goretzka also remained largely unremarkable, while Hoffenheim continued to look for opportunities. In the closing stages came Kingsley Coman, who had ended his quarantine at home due to a corona case in his private area. But even the winger couldn’t turn things around.
The Hoffenheim team has scored 13 points against FC Bayern since 2016/2017 (four wins, one draw, four defeats) – more than any other team.
