Osnabrück (dpa) – Hannover 96 promotion candidate suffered the first setback in the second division. A week after the opening success against Karlsruher SC, the team of coach Kenan Kocak lost the Lower Saxony game at VfL Osnabrück with 1: 2 (0: 1).
The match winner for the hosts was striker Christian Santos in front of 3,200 spectators. The newcomer scored both goals (33rd minute / penalty, 47th) and gave the new head coach Marco Grote a successful home debut at Bremer Brücke. Marvin Ducksch’s next goal came too late for the guests in injury time (90 + 1).
Overall, Hannover showed a disappointing performance. The Osnabrückers were much more aggressive and convinced with strong fighting performance. Santos’s 1-0 win was preceded by a controversial situation. Only after a few minutes of video study, referee Arne Aarnink decided to take a penalty after a duel between 96 defender Marcel Franke and VfL forward Etienne Amenyido.
Immediately after the break, Santos made everything clear with a powerful header from a corner. Even when 96 attacked coach Kocak completely in the final stages, Hanover remained harmless.
