The October update for Windows 10 is now available to all users. Microsoft wrote that in a blog post on Tuesday. The update is called “Windows 10 October 2020 Update” and is a so-called feature update. With such updates, Microsoft adds new functions to Windows 10 twice a year. An update like this only came out in May, which changed a number of things in Windows 10. More about this read here.

The October update also offers new features – albeit less so than with past updates. We’ll show you the major new features and how to get the update.

New start menu

One of the visible innovations is the changed start menu. In the October update, the app tiles will be transparent and the start menu color will match the background. The whole thing should also improve the display in Windows 10 light and dark mode. How to turn on dark mode we show in this photo show.

New version of Edge

Microsoft especially praises the latest version of the Edge browser that users receive with the Windows 10 update. For example, users in Edge can add so-called “collections” to content. With the new Edge version, users will also get price comparisons for store items in their collections, Microsoft writes.

Alt + Tab gets a new function

With the shortcut Alt + tab Users can now switch between browser tabs in Edge. Anyone who has previously pressed the key combination will see all open apps, but not the individual tabs in the browser. If you don’t want the new features, you can change the shortcut in the settings. You will find more useful keyboard shortcuts for Windows 10 here and here.

Further changes

With the update, users should be able to read more information about their system in the settings. In addition, users can now change the refresh rate of their monitor in the advanced display settings. Usually this is possible in the options of the graphics card program.

The new version of Windows 10 also automatically switches to tablet mode when a user disconnects the keyboard from their tablet. Until now, the system asks if it should change the mode. Also new: notifications now include app logos. This should make it easier for users to see which apps the messages relate to.

If you are reinstalling your computer or installing a new Windows PC, you can now also specify usage preferences. The system then adapts the taskbar to the user’s information.

How can I update my Windows?

When your system is ready for the update, it will usually be downloaded and installed automatically. But you can also manually check for updates. It goes like this:

  1. Open the settings.
  2. Select the menu ‘Update and security
  3. Click on “Looking for updates

Free storage space after update

If you are missing several gigabytes of storage space after a major Windows update, Microsoft may store the old version of Windows for another ten days in the so-called “windows.old” folder. This way, users can return to the latest stable version in case of problems. If you don’t want to wait ten days or need the space immediately, you can also release the memory manually. How it works, read here.

How do I get Windows updates earlier?

If you’d like to receive these and other updates sooner, you can sign up for the Windows Insider Program. How it works, read here.

Windows insiders will get access to future updates sooner, but must also grant Microsoft comprehensive access to information about their system. For example, the diagnostic privacy settings should be set accordingly. And: test versions of Windows can be unstable. Errors can cause important data to be lost. If you want to install a pre-release version of Windows on your computer, you must back up your data beforehand.
