London (AP) – Tottenham coach José Mourinho sees no chance of an early bet from newcomer Gareth Bale this week.
“Gareth Bale will not be able to play this weekend,” Mourinho said, referring to the Premier League game against record champions Manchester United on October 4. “He works very hard, dedicated, very professional, very happy, but he is not ready for the weekend yet.”
Tottenham Hotspur had already pointed out when Bale, who was initially on loan from Real Madrid for a year, that the Welshman will probably not be fit enough until after the international matches in mid-October.
Whether striker Heung-Min Son, who has an injured upper leg, can play against Man United, is also the question. “I would say there are serious doubts,” said Mourinho, “but I’m not saying he won’t play.” He expects Son and Bale in mid-October. “I think the two weeks of international matches could be important as the final phase of relaxation and fitness,” said the starting coach. “Hopefully they can play when we get back after the internationals over the weekend.”
Mourinho spoke out for the Europa League qualifier against Maccabi Haifa, one of Spurs’ four competitive games in just eight days. Previously, Tottenham had only come to a 1-1 draw in the Premier League match against Newscastle. Two days later, Spurs had the upper hand in the League Cup on penalties against Chelsea.
