In the end, only two points were missing – the MSV narrowly missed promotion to the second division last season. But things are going badly this season. Now the zebras are separated from their trainer.
MSV Duisburg is separated from coach Torsten Lieberknecht. The club announced this a day after the 1: 3 home loss against Viktoria Köln. “The results are incorrect and unfortunately we have not been able to see a positive development. That makes this step necessary now”, sports director Ivo Grlic said on the club’s website.
The “Zebras” are currently ranked 17th in the third division. Only two of the eight games were won. The view of Duisburg is further up. Last season they missed promotion to the second division by two points. “The team has potential and we are confident that with this potential we can get back on the road to success – even if the primary goal should be to get back into calm water,” said Grlic.
Torsten Lieberknecht has been in the coaching chair in Duisburg since October 2018. The 47-year-old coach was previously with Eintracht Braunschweig, where he was also a player for a long time. The MSV wants to present Lieberknecht’s successor on Sunday after the match against Türkgücü Munich. He must first “pass two negative corona tests to join the team”.
