Nadal meets Zverev opponents at his comeback in Rome

Rome (AP) – Spaniard Rafael Nadal meets his fellow countryman Pablo Carreño Busta at the tennis tournament in Rome when he returns after more than half a year of corona break. That was the result of the draw on Saturday.

Carreño Busta had only missed the final of the US Open on Friday (local time) in New York by losing to Alexander Zverev. He and Nadal each have a bye at the start in Rome and are in the round of the last 32 opponents.

Zverev from Hamburg will play against Austrian Dominik Thiem on Sunday for his first Grand Slam title in New York. The last two opponents have canceled their participation in the clay tournament in Rome. As defending champion, Nadal had renounced his participation in the US Open due to the corona pandemic. The 34-year-old has not played a tournament match since February. He is number two in Rome.

Serbian number one in the world Novak Djokovic, who was disqualified at the US Open in the eighth finals against Carreño Busta, is at the top in the Italian capital. Like Nadal, he has a bye. After the cancellation of Zverev, Jan-Lennard Struff is the only German in the main field of the ATP tournament. The Warsteiner is dealing with a qualifier.

Angelique Kerber from Kiel will meet the Czech Katerina Siniakova in the first round. Julia Görges will also play at the tournament. 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams from the US canceled her participation in the tournament due to Achilles tendon problems after her semi-final at the US Open.
