New York (AP) – Former tournament winner Naomi Osaka has reached the third round at the US Open. The 22-year-old Japanese beat Camila Giorgi from Italy 6-1, 6-2.
The former number one in the world once again drew attention to a victim of police brutality against African Americans wearing a different mask. This time, the name of Elijah McClain, who had passed away a year ago, was on guard. “I want people to be more knowledgeable. I take my reach for granted and I think I should use it for something,” she said after the success.
Previously, the number one seeded Czech Karolina Pliskova failed in the second round. The number three in the world surprisingly lost to the French Caroline Garcia 1: 6, 6: 7 (2: 7). After the cancellations of world champion number one Ashleigh Barty (Australia) and number two Simona Halep (Romania), Pliskova was one of the favorites for the title at the Grand Slam tournament in New York. In 2016 she only lost in the final to Angelique Kerber van Kiel.
Osaka said she has seven masks with seven names and hopes to wear them all – only if she makes it to the final. She wanted to raise awareness of racism with each mask. “It’s pretty sad that seven masks aren’t enough for the number of names,” said the 2018 US Open winner. She hopes to make it to the final so that at least these seven masks can see all.
