Following Joe Biden’s announced victory for president in the US, rulers around the world have congratulated. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu also thanked Donald Trump.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has congratulated Joe Biden and his deputy Kamala Harris on their victory in the US presidential election. “Joe, we’ve had a long and warm personal relationship for nearly 40 years,” Netanyahu wrote on Twitter on Sunday. He also knows Biden as a “great friend of Israel” and is looking forward to working with him and Harris “to deepen the special alliance between the US and Israel”.

Thank you for Trump’s friendship

Netanyahu thanked his closest ally, the incumbent Donald Trump, for the friendship he personally showed Israel and Netanyahu. He thanked Trump “for recognizing Jerusalem and the Golan Heights, for the resolute stance on Iran, for the historic peace agreements” and for taking Israeli-US relations to an unprecedented level.

“Leader of the Free World”

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin also congratulated Biden, calling him “Mr. President-Elect”. Rivlin wrote on Twitter, “As an old friend of Israel, you are now the leader of the free world and one of the closest and most important allies of the State of Israel.”

The strategic alliance between the two countries is “stronger than any political leadership” and is not based on friendship alone, Rivlin said, apparently referring to the particularly close relationship between Netanyahu and Trump. Rivlin wished Biden the best of luck and invited him to visit Jerusalem.
