Bremen (dpa) – Loud, positive and successful – Edin Terzic has already clearly emancipated himself from his previous boss Lucien Favre in his first game as coach of Borussia Dortmund.
In the 2-1 win over Werder Bremen, the 38-year-old coached black and yellow with the gusto that Favre, who was released after the 1: 5 against VfB Stuttgart, did nothing in his two and a half years at BVB to the annoyance of fans and those in charge . Had time to show. Terzic’s loud instructions and encouragement echoed time and again through the Weser Stadium, nearly deserted by Corona.
“Big compliments to him for how he has mastered it over the past two or three days,” said BVB captain Marco Reus. Terzic had called the national football player behind the 16-year-old starting debutant Youssoufa Moukoko in a somewhat more withdrawn position and chose the right tactical move at his premiere. With Reus showing one of his best performances of the season, he spun stages like in the best of times, securing the equally important and deserved victory with his 2-1 goal.
“We are of course very relieved. We felt the responsibility for last Saturday,” said Terzic. The embarrassing 1: 5 against Stuttgart had finally collapsed the long unstable frame between team and coach. According to the critical statements of leading players Reus and Mats Hummels in retrospect, the divorce from Favre, who was generally quite successful in Dortmund but never really liked, was inevitable.
“We already felt the pressure today,” admitted goalkeeper Roman Bürki. But against a passionate but playfully limited Bremen team, the Dortmund team showed in stages the great potential the team had. Even though there were still many shortcomings to be seen.
“We didn’t play the best football. Convenience has been lost a bit,” said Terzic. Before the game, the previous assistant coach had asked that he wanted to see BVB football again. The performance in Bremen was only the first step towards it. “We have plenty of topics we can still work on,” Terzic admitted honestly. “Today it was important that we pushed to the end and gave everything.”
One reason for separating from Favre was that these obvious things were recently missing. Terzic should now be given the opportunity to get back to the top with Borussia by the summer and be successful in the Champions League against Sevilla FC and in the DFB Cup.
And so the victory after three failed matches was also a first step for him to a permanent contract with BVB. With his committed and open manner, he also collected the first plus points among those responsible. Sports director Michael Zorc fell relieved after the game around Terzic’s neck. Maybe he and club boss Hans-Joachim Watzke don’t have to deal with outside candidates like Gladbach’s Marco Rose or Leipzig’s Julian Nagelsmann.
