London (AP) – Despite national player Timo Werner’s first goal in the blues jersey, Chelsea were eliminated in the 16th round of the League Cup.
Coach Frank Lampard’s team lost 4: 5 (1: 1, 1: 0) on penalties in the London derby against Tottenham Hotspur. The decisive fifth penalty for Chelsea was awarded to Mason Mount. Werner (19th) gave the Blues the lead, Erik Lamela (83rd) equalized just before the end of regular time. There was no extension.
Chelsea dominated the game in the first half. Werner met from the edge of the penalty area with a powerful right footed shot. His national teammate Kai Havertz, who had scored three goals in the previous round, sat on the bench the entire game. After half time Tottenham got better and earned the late equalizer. When Lamela hit up close, the Blues’ defense was unsorted.
