Passau (dpa) – Frank Ulrich Montgomery, the CEO of the World Medical Association, has sharply criticized hosting FC Bayern Munich’s Supercup final against FC Sevilla in Budapest’s corona risk area.
“Football seems to enjoy the freedom of fools. That is counterproductive and the wrong signal,” said Montgomery of the “Passauer Neue Presse”.
“When citizens can no longer spend their holidays abroad, but FC Bayern bosses and players fly to risky areas, that is a devastating sign,” the 68-year-old Montgomery criticized. If officials and players wanted to take social responsibility, they shouldn’t just think about their wallets and game earnings, said the head of the World Medical Association.
The game, which Bayern won 2-1 after extra time, was played for the public despite the high number of infections in the corona-risk area of Budapest. UEFA spoke as the organizer of a “test balloon”. According to the European association, 15,500 tickets have been sold.
