St. Gallen (dpa) – There is another corona case in the Swiss national football team after Xherdan Shaqiri.
A few hours before the friendly against Croatia in St. Gallen, the Swiss Football Association (SFV) announced that Manuel Akanji from Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund had tested positive for the virus. “He is therefore preventively in isolation and shows no symptoms,” the association said on its website. Further clarifications are underway.
Although the match against Croatia could take place as planned in consultation with the authorities, the upcoming Nations League matches are uncertain. Switzerland opposes the German team in Cologne on October 13. Before that, the Nati will play against Spain in Madrid on Saturday. The SFV said it was clarified what influence the current facts would have on the further course of the selection games.
According to the union, it is certain that the Dortmund defender Akanji has not been infected by Shaqiri. “In this regard, the SFV also received verbal information in advance that Shaqiri’s positive test result is likely due to a previous infection and therefore is not contagious,” the association announced. This was the result of an additional blood test with reliable antibody detection.
