London (dpa) – The English football champions FC Liverpool have taken the top of the table in the Premier League for now with a hard-fought home win.
Coach Jürgen Klopp’s team won 2: 1 (1: 1) from West Ham United – at least until Sunday afternoon, the Klopp team is now at the top with 16 points.
The Spaniard Pablo Fornals had put the guests ahead in the 10th minute. Liverpool’s top striker Mohamed Salah equalized with a penalty (42.) in Anfield before half time, the Portuguese Diogo Jota scored the winning goal (85.). Liverpool’s city rival Everton could counter on Sunday (3pm) and overtake the Reds – provided they win at Newcastle United.
German national players Timo Werner and Kai Havertz had previously taken their next Premier League victory with Chelsea. In the 3-0 (1-0) away win against Burnley FC, Werner scored his third goal in the seventh league game for Blauw-Zwart in the 70th minute. Hakim Ziyech (26th) and Kurt Zouma (63rd) had previously met in front of the superior London guests, who initially moved up to fourth at the table.
Manchester City triumphed 1-0 (1-0) at Sheffield United. Kyle Walker scored the winning goal (28th). For the Citizens, who have played a mixed season so far, it was their third win in their sixth game. Coach Pep Guardiola’s team has played one game less than the competition.
