Liverpool (AP) – Defending champion FC Liverpool celebrated a narrow victory in its season opener in the English Premier League.
Against newly promoted Leeds United with an unfortunate German international Robin Koch, coach Jürgen Klopp’s team won 4: 3 (3: 2). Mohamed Salah (4th) gave the Reds an early lead with a penalty kick from Koch. Jack Harrison (12th) quickly countered.
Liverpool then took the lead again twice via Virgil van Dijk (20th) and Salah (33rd). Patrick Bamford (30th) and Mateusz Klich (66th) scored to tie before Salah again scored the winning goal from a penalty, this time caused by a foul.
Argentine star coach Marcelo Bielsa’s visiting team was consistently combative in the game. The “whites” had entered the Premier League directly after 16 years of inferiority.
In the afternoon, Arsenal FC won 3-0 (1-0) against newly promoted Fulham FC without ex-world champion Mesut Özil at the start of the English Premier League. Arsenal took the lead early on with a goal from Alexandre Lacazette (9th minute) who took advantage of errors in the home side’s defense.
Brazilian newcomer Gabriel, who had recently taken over Arsenal from Lille OSC, gave the Londoners the second goal after a corner kick from his compatriot Willian (50th). Top striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (57th) sealed the victory in the London derby, which, like the match between Liverpool and Leeds, was played in front of empty rows.
Ozil’s future in London seems more open than ever. Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta had given him little hope of a mission on Friday.
