Manchester (AP) – The English football champion FC Liverpool has temporarily lost the lead in the championship in the Premier League. In the top game at runner-up Manchester City, the Reds only came to a 1-1 (1-1).
The new leader in England is Leicester City for the second Tottenham Hotspur. While Liverpool are in third place, Man City remains in the center of the table.
In the deserted Etihad Stadium, the two teams played a fast and entertaining game especially in the first half. After a foul by City defender Kyle Walker on Sadio Mané, Mohamed Salah (13th minute) converted the penalty kick for the team from coach Jürgen Klopp. “Great football! Two top teams ready for a great fight. The energy level of both teams was incredible,” said Klopp, “we had some good counter-attacks. A lot. But we just didn’t finish it, which is a shame.”
Gabriel Jesus (31st) scored to compensate Pep Guardiola’s team, which has not lived up to expectations so far this season – and was unlucky on Sunday. Shortly before half time Kevin De Bruyne missed the lead for Man City when he shot a hand penalty wide to the left. During periods of pouring rain in Manchester, both teams also had opportunities to score in the second half, but the ultimately fair draw remained.
Besides defense chief Virgil van Dijk, who will be out indefinitely after a successful knee operation, Klopp also had to do without the ailing ex-Bayern Munich Thiago. Guardiola missed his star striker Sergio Agüero due to an injury at Man City.
On Friday, Southampton FC temporarily climbed to the top of the table with a 2-0 win over Newcastle United. On Sunday afternoon, Tottenham Hotspur overtook West Bromwich Albion thanks to a late 1-0 (0-0) win. Harry Kane scored the winning goal in the 88th minute. About two hours later, new leader Leicester caught up with Spurs. Jamie Vardy (15th / penalty kick) scored a narrow 1-0 (1-0) win against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
