Berlin (dpa) – The Spanish football champion Real Madrid got no further than a draw against Villarreal, missing the direct connection to the top of the table in the Primera División.

After a quick lead by Mariano Díaz in the second minute, the Madrid team and international Toni Kroos gave up the 1-1 penalty kick to Gerard Moreno (76th) in the second half.

It was still a bitter evening for the eternal competitor FC Barcelona and his goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen. The German national goalkeeper made a serious blunder, which led to the goal in the 0-1 defeat at Atlético Madrid.

He was rushed far from his goal after a ball from the hosts in the Catalan half to clear away. At about 40 yards from his own goal, however, he failed to get the ball, instead Ter Stegen was tunneled by Yannick Carrasco before the Madrid pro slipped into the empty goal. But that’s not all for Barcelona: after the break, veteran Gerard Piqué had to be replaced, possibly more seriously injured.

With the victory, Atletico tied the score on points with leader Real Sociedad San Sebastian (20), but even has one game less. Real Madrid is three points less, while FC Barcelona is already nine points behind the leaders.
