Matera (AP) – The French cycling champion Arnaud Démare has won the sixth stage of the 103rd Giro d’Italia.

After 188 kilometers from Castrovillari to Matera, the 29-year-old of Team Groupama-FDJ won the sprint against Australian Michael Matthews and took his 73rd professional victory. Fabio Felline from Italy was third. For Démare it was already the success of the second day in this year’s Tour of Italy.

Despite a slight decline, Portuguese Jorge Almeida continues to wear the leader’s pink jersey in the general classification. Almeida is 43 seconds ahead of the Spaniard Pello Bilbao. Victory candidate Vincenzo Nibali of Italy is 1:01 minutes behind in fifth place, still in a promising position.

The Giro continues on Friday with the seventh stage over 143 kilometers from Matera to Brindisi. The sprinters should be in demand again in the final.
