Eindhoven (AP) – New club, new challenges and a revived goal: after his surprising move to PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch Eredivisie, Mario Götze also wants to return to the German football team.
“I absolutely want to go back to the national team,” said the attacking midfielder during his official presentation to the Europa League participants. “I am only 28 years old. I still have big ambitions,” he told media representatives. But first of all, he wanted to go to his new club, get back to full fitness and play. “That’s the main goal.”
Götze was last in the selection of national coach Joachim Löw almost three years ago. The 63-time selection player came on November 14, 2017 as a substitute in the 2-2 draw against France. At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Götze scored the decisive goal to make it 1-0 against Argentina in the final and scored the selection of the German Football Association (DFB) for the fourth World Cup title.
Götze had signed a two-year contract with PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday. The 28-year-old’s contract with Borussia Dortmund had not been extended before. Since he has since been without a contract, the transfer deadline on Monday did not apply to him.
After more than ten years in the Bundesliga with the stations Dortmund (2009-2013 and 2016-2020) and FC Bayern Munich (2013-2016), Götze is looking for a new challenge with the 24-time Dutch champion. “The most important thing for me is to play football, go full throttle and then win the games. That is the priority I have as an athlete and athlete,” said Götze. In Dortmund, he made only 15 Bundesliga appearances and played no part in coach Lucien Favre’s plans.
In Eindhoven, Götze now hopes to play more often under German coach Roger Schmidt. The former Bayer Leverkusen coach was one of the decisive factors for the change. “I am convinced that I have taken the right step here, with the philosophy of reaching a top level again, reaching top condition, playing games. I think that is the right coach for me, the right philosophy, and I am just glad things are going to start soon, ”he said after finishing his first practice session with the team on Thursday.
However, he does not expect to be used in the next league game – on October 18 in Zwolle. He has a good basis in terms of condition. But he needs a few more weeks of team training, acclimatization and getting to know the team members. “It will take a while,” Gotze said.
