Mannheim (AP) – The handball Bundesliga clubs Rhein-Neckar Löwen and Füchse Berlin have reached the group stage in the new European competition.
The Lions lost the qualifying round against Danish representative TTH Holstebro 26:27 (9:13). The two-time German champion had won the first leg at 28:22 and could afford a narrow defeat. The weakened Berliners beat Hungarian representative HEDO-B. Braun Gyöngyös clear with 36:24 (17:12), the Füchse had won the first leg with 25:23.
The best Berlin pitcher for 500 spectators in the Max-Schmeling-Halle was Hans Lindberg with six goals. Coach Jaron Siewert had to do without the sextet Fabian Wiede, Jacob Holm, Frederik Simak, Johan Koch, Milos Vujovic and Mattias Zachrisson. Defense chief Jakov Gojun and Simon Ernst were also out for a short time.
The meeting in the Mannheim SAP Arena of the Lions took place without spectators. Romain Lagarde was North Baden’s top scorer with seven goals. The group stage will be drawn on Thursday.
