The long-standing top player of the German record champion has to leave the field early at the season opener for FC Groningen. Previously, there was other speculation about the 36-year-old.
Former Bayern star Arjen Robben had to end his comeback after half an hour in the Eredivisie at the start of the season. In the match of his FC Groningen against PSV Eindhoven, the 36-year-old was injured early and was replaced. The captain had to watch how the Groningers lost 1: 3 (0: 1) against the team of former Bundesliga coach Roger Schmidt.
Cody Gakpo (34th, 87th) and Donyell Malen (57th) scored for the hosts. For the guests, 18-year-old Tomas Suslov (53), who entered the game for Robben, was successful.
Prior to the game, speculation had arisen that 96-time Dutch national player Robben could play for the Orange again at the European Championship 2021. Interim national coach Dwight Lodeweges did not want to rule out a return, at least for the time being. “You are never too young, but perhaps never too old to be valuable to the national team”, he told the Amsterdam newspaper “De Telegraaf” last weekend.
