Madrid (AP) – Luis Rubiales will remain President of the Spanish Football Association (RFEF) until 2024. According to the association, the 43-year-old former professional was confirmed in office with the votes of 95 out of 140 eligible voters.
Rubiales has been “Presidente” since May 2018. Before that, he was president of the Spanish Players Union between 2010 and 2017. He wanted to make the RFEF “the best association in the world”, said the old and new association boss.
In the election, the controversial Rubiales had no opponent. Former national goalkeeper Iker Casillas announced his candidacy in February, but withdrew it in June. The 39-year-old cited the coronavirus crisis as the main reason for his decision.
