Lisbon (AP) – Portugal’s former exceptional professional Rui Costa was instrumental in the transition from national footballer Luca Waldschmidt to Benfica Lisbon.
The 48-year-old sports director from Benfica came to Freiburg to convince the then SC player of a transfer.
“That made an impression. I still remember how Rui Costa won the Champions League with AC Milan as a player. Suddenly he was in front of me”, Waldschmidt told “Sport Bild” (Wednesday). “He told me he really wanted me.” Shortly after, the 24-year-old moved to Portugal’s capital. As a player, Costa won the top league trophy with AC Milan in 2003.
