Mannheim (AP) – SC Freiburg is threatened with a long-term failure from its new goalkeeper Mark Flekken.
“We have to assume that he will of course be out for a few weeks, probably months,” said SC coach Christian Streich after the 2-1 victory in the first round of the cup at the third division football club SV Waldhof Mannheim. The Dutchman Flekken injured his arm while warming up and was then taken to hospital for examination. Newcomer Benjamin Uphoff replaced him in the goal of the Breisgauer.
The 27-year-old Flekken was accompanied by two escorts from the field with a splint around his arm about 45 minutes before kick-off. Shortly afterwards, Waldhof captain Marcel Seegert also got injured during the warm-up program. The Mannheim team may also miss the defender at the start of the competition.
