Berlin (dpa) – DFL Director Christian Seifert has spoken out against redistributing TV revenues from Bundesliga marketing in order to open up the battle for the title again.
“I think it is an illusion that a full even distribution of national media revenues is the key to a more exciting title fight,” said the head of the German football league in an interview with the trade magazine “Kicker”.
The 51-year-old kept saying the levers are manageable. He pointed out that 54 percent of the national media revenue would be shared equally. “That’s more than in any other European competition.”
Instead of making the competition more exciting, an equal division would put clubs like Eintracht Frankfurt and SC Freiburg at a disadvantage. “More tension at the top would mainly be achieved by strengthening the clubs in second, third and fourth place,” he says.
After the television rights were granted in June, a discussion began about changing the previous distribution mode. For the seasons 2021/22 to 2024/25 in the Bundesliga and the 2nd Bundesliga, a total of 4.4 billion euros was earned, some 240 million euros less than in the current TV contract that runs until June 2021.
