Shooting star Davies almost ended up at Crystal Palace

London (AP) – Young star Alphonso Davies of the German record football champion FC Bayern Munich almost ended up with the English Premier League club Crystal Palace a few years ago, according to club boss Steve Parish.

His sister, who lives in Edmonton, Canada, recommended the defender to him when he was there at a football school when he was 15 or 16, Parish said in an interview with the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”. “We flew to Canada specifically to see the player. We wanted to sign him, but we couldn’t get another work permit in England,” said the London club’s co-owner.

19-year-old Canadian international Davies moved from the Vancouver Whitecaps of the North American football league MLS to Bayern in 2019. Last season, Davies earned a permanent place in the left-back position in the Champions League winner.

He is sure Davies would have been interested in coming to Crystal Palace a few years ago, Parish said. “That’s why I was a little torn when I watched Bayern. But I’m happy for Alphonso,” said Parish, referring to the Champions League final and Bayern’s title win.
