Paris (AP) – German coach Thomas Tuchel has received a reprimand from sports director Leonardo at French football champion Paris Saint-Germain.
The Brazilian has sharply rejected the former Bundesliga coach’s demands for reinforcement. “We didn’t like that at all. If someone is not satisfied and decides to stay, then they have to accept the club’s policies and internal rules,” said Leonardo after the 6-1 win against SCO Angers.
Tuchel had previously warned that the team had to be strengthened, otherwise they couldn’t ask for the same. PSG reached the Champions League final last season, but lost to FC Bayern Munich there. Leonardo reminded Tuchel of the difficult economic times caused by the corona pandemic. “We live in a difficult situation, not only in football,” said Leonardo of a loss of about EUR 100 million to PSG as a result of the Corona crisis.
Leonardo’s words must be directed to Tuchel as a clear warning. “To stay with this club, you have to be content, with the desire to suffer for the club, to sacrifice yourself, even when we are going through a difficult time,” said the former international. Tuchel’s contract in Paris expires at the end of the season. The coach has not been undisputed in the past. But after the club had won all the league titles and reached the premier class final, the criticism fell silent. Leonardo left it open whether there would be a penalty from the club for Tuchel. “We will see what we do internally.”
PSG only signed right back Alessandro Florenzi and substitute Alexandre Letellier this summer. In contrast, Edinson Cavani, Thiago Silva, Thomas Meunier, Tanguy Kouassi and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting left the club. “I wouldn’t say the team is weak. We’re talking about a huge team,” said Leonardo, referring to superstars like Neymar, Kylian Mbappé and Angel di Maria.
