Düsseldorf (dpa) – Superstar Sander Sagosen has led the THW Kiel to its tenth Supercup triumph.
25-year-old Norwegian was the best pitcher for the German record handball champion with seven goals in the 102nd North Derby against number two SG Flensburg-Handewitt in the 102nd North Derby (14:13), making it the first title of the season . Won in 2020/21.
2100 spectators witnessed the comeback of German handball live after a 207-day Corona break in the ISS Dome in Düsseldorf. The responsible health department had approved 2,640 visitors. “Since we only had two days to sell tickets, this number is very good. We are satisfied with it,” said Frank Bohmann, HBL’s general manager.
The two arch-rivals had traveled to the Rhine together in a charter plane and from the first second they gave each other nothing on the ground. As predicted by national coach Alfred Gislason, the German top teams met at eye level. In the first half, leadership changed constantly. No team with more than two goals could drive away until half time.
The Kielers, who had to do without the knee-operated world handball player Niklas Landin in the goal and the also injured backcourt Nikola Bilyk in the attack, initially developed little danger of goal from the second row of the grid. It wasn’t until the end of the first half that Sagosen, who came over from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer and who often shone in preparation, also appeared as a goal scorer and gave THW a narrow lead at half time with his third goal.
Under Sagosen’s leadership, the record champions first took a three-goal lead shortly after the move (16: 13/34), which initially didn’t last long. But the THW continued and pulled away with three hits at 6:15 PM (39th). This cushion lasted until the final phase – especially because national goalkeeper Dario Quenstedt managed to distinguish himself with several saves.
But his Flensburg counterpart Benjamin Buric also defused a large number of throws, so that the SG was back in touch more than eight minutes before time at 9:22 pm. Kiel was not impressed by this and brought the victory safely to the finish.
