The author of the “Ibiza video” has apparently been caught in Berlin. He had put the then Austrian Vice-Chancellor Strache in compromising situations – triggering a state crisis.
The alleged mastermind of the Ibiza video, which led to the overthrow of the Austrian government in 2019, has been arrested in Berlin. The public prosecutor in Vienna and the Berlin police on Friday confirmed the arrest of the German news agency, which the Austrian newspaper “Die Presse” had initially reported. Special units of the Berlin police on Thursday morning in Berlin-Pankow attacked the person who had been wanted under a European arrest warrant for over a year.
In the video, which was shot in 2017 in a villa on the Spanish island of Ibiza, the later Austrian vice-chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache of the right-wing FPÖ spoke to an alleged Russian oligarch about illegal party donations and large-scale orders, among other things, and turned out to be susceptible for corruption. Strache has always denied any wrongdoing. The publication of clips from the video by “Spiegel” and “Süddeutsche Zeitung” in May 2019 led to Strache’s resignation from the ÖVP-FPÖ government of Chancellor Sebastian Kurz and later to fresh elections.
Germany must now decide on extradition
The private detective, who appears in the video as a companion of the decoy and allegedly strung the trap and bugged the house, went into hiding after the video went public. According to the “Presse”, in addition to the illegal production of sound and film recordings, he is also accused of trafficking in cocaine. According to the Vienna Public Prosecutor’s Office, the German authorities must now decide whether to initiate surrender proceedings.
Strache responded with satisfaction to the arrest on Friday. “I am happy with the arrest of the criminal mastermind of the Ibiza trap (even after such a long time) and now I hope for a quick and complete clarification and also for the discovery of the other henchmen, customers and backers!” , He shared on his Facebook Side with.
