New York (dpa) – Austrian Dominic Thiem reached the third round of the US Open on his birthday in a calm cycle. The number three in the tennis world easily won 6: 3, 6: 3, 6: 2 against the Indian Sumit Nagal in New York.
On his 27th day of honor, Thiem only needed 1:58 hours for his success. In the third round, however, Thiem awaits a real endurance test. The Australian Open finalist meets Croatian Marin Cilic, who won the title in Flushing Meadows in 2014.
“Marin is a real champion who knows how to win big games. It will not be an easy task,” said Thiem before the game on Saturday. But before the Austrian wanted to deal with his next opponent, there should at least be a small party. Due to the strict hygiene conditions under which the US Open takes place in the Corona crisis, but only with the closest team.
Just like the Austrian with the men, the American Sofia Kenin made it to the next round with the women without much difficulty. The winner of the Australian Open beat Canadian Leylah Fernandez 6: 4, 6: 3. Kenin is number two in New York after the cancellations of Ashleigh Barty and Simona Halep. The best placed Karolina Pliskova from the Czech Republic unexpectedly failed in the second round on Wednesday.
Surprisingly, Spaniard Garbine Muguruza is no longer here. The two-time Grand Slam tournament winner from Spain had to admit defeat to Bulgarian Zwetana Pironkowa 5: 7, 3: 6. Muguruza won the French Open in 2016 and Wimbledon in 2017, after which the 26-year-old was repeatedly thrown back through injuries. Johanna Konta, seeded number nine, was also eliminated. The British lost to Sorana Cirstea of Romania with 2: 6, 7: 6 (7: 5), 6: 4.
