Nice (dpa) – The first climbing party is scheduled for the second stage of the 107th Tour de France. The start and finish is in Nice again, the yellow jersey will almost certainly change hands. The sprinters around opening winner Alexander Kristoff should not play a role.
ROUTE: Already on the second day it goes into the mountains. After the start in Nice, two mountains of the first category await the 186 kilometers long route, including the 1,607 meter high Col de Turini with an average gradient of 7.3 percent. Since there are still more than 80 kilometers from the top to the finish, there should be no exchange of hits between the top favorites. However, there may be attacks on the Col des Quatres Chemins, a third category mountain, eleven kilometers from the finish in Nice. After all, bonus seconds are waiting for the drivers here.
YELLOW JERSEY: Taking the lead in the general classification should be a little pleasure for Norwegian Alexander Kristoff. The second stage is too difficult for the sprinter for that. Even if he made it to the peloton after the two mountains in the first category, it should be over by the final climb at the latest. France’s favorite Julian Alaphilippe, who rode 14 days in yellow last year, could look for his chance here.
GERMAN: “Don’t waste your time” is Emanuel Buchmann’s motto. Due to his fall injury, the fourth of last year wants to get through the first stages well, attacks are excluded. Max Schachmann, who started the tour with a collarbone fracture, also wants to survive the first week well.
SPECTATORS: As the region on the Côte d’Azur has been declared a “red zone” due to the increasing number of corona infections, the measures for spectators have been tightened up again. The climbs are not accessible by public transport, fans are only allowed to climb the mountains by bicycle or on foot. Access is also severely restricted in the start and finish areas.
