Gap (dpa) – The short detour into the mountains is over. On the fifth day of the 107th Tour de France, the sprinters return to the train. Will Australian superstar Caleb Ewan strike a second time? Or is it Irish Sam Bennett’s turn this time?
ROUTE: After climbing the day before, the Tour de France mainly goes downhill in the fifth stage. If the field is still almost 1000 meters above sea level shortly after the start in Gap on Wednesday, it will descend to Privas at only 270 meters above sea level. Accordingly, there are hardly any difficulties to overcome, two mountains of the fourth category are hardly worth mentioning. However, caution is advised, there is a roundabout 300 meters from the finish.
FAVORITES: The Sprinter of course. Above all, the Australian star Caleb Ewan must aim for his second stage victory. Will there be another duel with Irishman Sam Bennett? Maybe opening winner Alexander Kristoff can strike again.
YELLOW SHIRT: Julian Alaphilippe’s top position should not be in danger. The Frenchman is only four seconds ahead of Adam Yates, but the Briton is not exactly a proven sprinter and therefore should not get bonus seconds.
GERMAN: Perhaps one of the eleven German professional riders can position themselves in a leading group. In any case, German success is not to be expected in the bunch sprint. André Greipel would certainly be a candidate in top form, but after his fall at the start, the old star likes to take the field to the goal.
