Erfurt (AP) – Herbert Müller of the seven-time champion Thüringer HC has criticized the German handball players for their previous performances at the European Championship in Denmark, but gives them good opportunities for the further course of the tournament.
In an interview with the “Freie Wort”, the THC coach said that the 11:42 pm defeat to his tournament favorites Norway reminded him above all of the national football team’s 6-0 victory against Spain. “A handball country like Germany should not perform like that. We claim to close the gap with the world’s best on an international scale. But so far the EM has been a step backwards on this path.”
According to Müller, also coach of the Austrian women’s team, the basis is lacking. “Things like cover aggressiveness, switching games or solving 1: 1 situations. We don’t have enough choice in some positions, I think on the outside. We Germans are less talented in handball and need it badly,” said the 58 -year-old.
Müller believes a Saturday success against Hungary could give the DHB team a boost. “In addition to Corona, this European Championship has some unknowns, as the results in the parallel group with world champion Holland show. Nobody expected that Croatia would go unbeaten as a group winner here.”
